Abstract	This comprehensive handbook contains accreditation materials of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. These include the general institutional requirements, the criteria for accreditation, and new policies on institutional change. The chapters are: (1) "Introduction to Voluntary Accreditation and the Commission"; (2) "Affiliation with the Commission" (forms, institutional obligations, sanctions, record of status and scope); (3) "The General Institutional Requirements" (including purpose and relationship with the Criteria); (4) "The Criteria for Accreditation" (working with the patterns of evidence, the five Criteria, and focus sections on each); (5) "Institutional Evaluation for Improvement"; (6) "Peer Review as a Form of Evaluation and Self Regulation"; (7) "Logistics for Evaluation Visits" (institutional and team preparations, conducting the visit); (8) "The Team Report and Recommendation" (audiences, writing responsibilities, report structure, preparation and submission); (9) "Review Processes and Commission Action"; (10) "The Evaluation Process: Charts, Time Lines, Samples"; (11) "Other Monitoring Visits" (focused evaluations, special cases); (12) "Institutional Change" (definition, evaluation); (13) "The Commission's Candidacy Program"; (14) "Special Focus: Assessing Student Academic Achievement"; and (15) "Informing the Public." Extensive appendixes contain rules of procedure, resources on higher education topics, regional accrediting bodies, state agencies, and information on the Commission including offices and staff, calendar, publication, terminology and common abbreviations.
