Abstract	A project was conducted to instruct adult education teachers on communications and counseling issues. A series of four workshops were held to provide instructional and support personnel with practical skills that will make them work more effectively with their students. Attendance at all four workshops was excellent, with 20-30 practitioners at each. A positive response to the workshops was demonstrated in written evaluations from participants. The workshops provided much-needed staff development to new and experienced staff. They were particularly helpful in training staff in the following areas: (1) understanding their limits in counseling; (2) making referrals; (3) listening and communication skills; (4) goal setting; (5) motivational skills; (6) understanding diversity; and (7) basic counseling techniques.
