AbstractThis publication outlines some of the techniques school districts are using to survive in an era of fiscal restraint. Information in this resource directory is based on a national survey of 108 school districts affiliated with the National School Board Association. Section 1 summarizes the survey findings, which indicate that school districts have tried to make budget cuts that do not directly affect the instructional program. The most frequently mentioned cost-cutting methods included promoting interagency collaboration, increasing energy efficiency, consolidating transportation routes, and changing purchasing policies. Obstacles to the strategies included general resistance to change, lack of communication, and personnel practices and contracts. Section 2 provides brief descriptions of 228 ways in which districts have cut costs or raised revenues. The tips are organized into 24 categories. Each tip includes a description of the technique, estimated cost savings (or generated revenue), and a contact person and telephone number. Section 3 provides basic information on the school districts participating in the survey. One figure is included. (LMI)
