Abstract | Papers from the 1991 joint Southern Conference on Language Teaching (SCOLT)/ Foreign Language Association of North Carolina (FLANC) conference are presented. Because the state of North Carolina is in the forefront of state-mandated foreign language education in the elementary schools (FLES), 4 of the 10 articles in this volume address FLES implementation. Papers and authors are as follows: "Writing from the Start: A Task-Oriented Developmental Writing Program for Foreign Language Students" (Virginia M. Scott); "Using Student Feedback to Reinforce Learning: Process and Progress" (Carolyn L. Hansen); "Infusing Critical and Creative Thinking Skills into the Foreign Language Classroom" (Frances S. Hoch and Timothy Hart); "Teaching About Holidays as an Aspect of Culture" (Samia Seragelin); "Reinforcing the Elementary School Curriculum with Content-Based FLES" (Audrey Heining-Boynton); "Celebrating 1992: Rediscovering Our Indigenous and Hispanic Heritages," including suggested readings and resources (Joann McFerran Mount); "Video in the Foreign Language Classroom: Using Commercials: (E.-Annette Koeppel); "Student Attitudes about the Study of Foreign Languages: Report of a Survey," (Randall L. Alford); "A Comparison of Student Performance in Partial Immersion and FLES Programs" (Alline B. Riddick); and "Developing Proficiency-Based Game Approaches" (John I. Liontas). Contains 131 references. (LB) |
