Abstract	The search for a new head of an independent school is complex and requires matching the values and characteristics of the school with a qualified candidate. The difficulty and importance of this task is often underestimated by those seeking new school heads. A mistake in choosing an administrative head can result in failure to secure effective leadership for the school. Other challenges independent schools face also impede the process. As costs of running an independent school rise, fund raising is an increasingly important task for school heads. Fewer school-age children, more demanding parents, and changing demographics are also factors that must be considered in choosing a school head. This guide provides information to assist search committees in hiring a new school head. Chapter topics include the following: leadership in independent schools; hiring a search consultant; preparing the board for transition; selecting a search committee; starting the process; legal and ethical concerns in the search process; identifying, recruiting, and evaluating candidates; interviewing semifinalists; checking references, planning campus visits, and narrowing to final candidates; making the choice; and achieving a successful transition. Following a list of National Association of Independent Schools principles of good practice for member schools, seven appendices provide additional guidelines and samples of documents used in a search.
