AbstractThis study examines ways in which the "child question" is a problem for contemporary sociology, and specifies concepts by which childhood might be understood as a modern social phenomenon. The study first examines insights of the feminist movement and academic feminism. Conceptual and methodological insights of feminist research, including insights that concern sexual politics, gender analysis, and the deconstruction and subsequent reconstruction of theoretical knowledge, are extended to the study of childhood. These insights are applied to a study of the organization of the everyday life of children living in one-parent households in four Nordic countries. The results of this study revealed three everyday life patterns for children: (1) a classical childhood, i.e., an extension of the modern childhood phenomenon in children's post-divorce situation; (2) a modern urban or suburban childhood which is predicated on social and cultural services for children; and (3) an innovative childhood that extends beyond the nuclear family. The study is designed to show the complexity in children's experience of the phenomenon of childhood. A 392-item bibliography is attached. (MM)
