Abstract | This book describes issues, trends, and practical teaching concerns that surround cooperative learning. It puts forward specific organizational plans and content area lessons for teachers who would like to become more familiar with active team learning in the classroom. Major themes include collaborative approaches to multicultural education, creativity, literacy, numeracy, educational technology, and an interdisciplinary curriculum. The first of eight chapters looks generally at the application of cooperative learning in the 1990s. The second chapter describes various kinds of cooperative learning programs developed by education professionals, and analyzes their differences. The third chapter looks at how cooperative learning promotes literacy. The fourth chapter addresses scientific literacy and cooperative learning. The fifth chapter discusses the use of computers with cooperative learning, including multimedia computer platforms. The sixth chapter considers collaboration, creativity, and art education. The seventh chapter presents thematic approaches to learning, arguing that this approach integrates the whole curriculum. Practical strategies are also offered. The eighth chapter looks at the larger picture, suggesting that cooperative learning challenges the foundational assumptions of education. References accompany each chapter. (JB) |
