Abstract | This document contains summaries of five workshops, each with several speakers, held at a conference on competency-based training (CBT) in Australia. The following are included in Session 1, Developing and Delivering CBT Programs: "Developing and Delivering CBT Programs--Opening Speech" (Steve McDonald); "Competency Standards and the CBT System" (Peter Hannigan); "CBT--Will Employers Participate?" (Brian Conroy); and "A Brief Overview of the ACTU (Australian Council of Trade Unions) Policy on CBT" (Jane Carnegie). In Session 2, Developing Competency Standards 1, are the following: "CBT: The Problems" (Peter Thomson); "Taking the Mystique out of CBT" (Percy Worsnop); "Nationally Consistent Practices" (John Nathan); "A Competency-based Trade Training Program" (Ian Neeson); "CBT Awareness Program for Employers of Apprentice Cooks" (Terry Dwan); "Alternative Delivery Systems with Regard to the National Training Reform Agenda" (Bob Mulcahy); and "Multi-media Project" (Mal Chisholm). The following papers are in Session 3, Developing Competency Standards 2: "Role of the Competency Standards Bodies (CSBs)" (Percy Worsnop); "Clerks' Training Model Project" (Clarice Ballenden); "Competency-based Training in the APS (Australian Public Service)" (Diane Paton); "Social and Community Services Competency Methodology Project" (Cathy Emery); and "Feasibility of Expressing Generic Management Skills as Competencies" (Billie Slater). Session 4, Training Programs in CBT, contains the following presentation: "The Provision of Training in the Delivery and Assessment of Competency-based Training" (Hugh Guthrie, Doug Gilham). Papers in Session 4, Assessment and Recognition, are as follows: "Assessment Models Appropriate for CBT and Their Relationship to Teaching and Learning Approaches" (John Whiteley, John Dungan); "Assessment in the Workplace: Challenges Ahead" (Leigh Toop); "Clerks' Training Model Project and Associated Projects on Assessment" (Janet Scarfe); "Guidelines for Assessing Affective Skills" (Ray Orr, Stephen Billett); "Industry Assessors Project" (Sally Davis); "Social Justice Implications for the Delivery of CBT" (Shirley Evans); and "Transition Assessment Arrangements and Developments for the Building and Construction Industry" (Joseph Zonneveldt).
