Abstract | the first of four lessons on comprehensive school counseling and guidance programs presented in this document discusses the competencies contained in the National Career Development Guidelines and those promoted by the National Career Development Association and the American School Counselor Association. The second lesson helps counselors know how and why to promote comprehensive counseling and guidance programs built on educational-developmental principles. The third lesson explains the concepts of comprehensive counseling and guidance programs, in the hope of encouraging counselors to actively promote greater implementation of these programs in schools. The fourth lesson allows counselor education students to practice developing life and career plans. Included with each lesson is information on the justification for the lesson; the expected learner outcome; instructor resources; directions for teaching-learning interaction; debriefing strategies; list of resources; and a brief discussion of an individualized learning plan for persons studying this content in an individualized program.
