Abstract | The Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS), here summarized for administrators, are intended to provide information about the skills development of individual students and about relative strengths and weaknesses of the instructional program. The ITBS represents the first comprehensive elementary school and secondary school statewide testing program in the nation, having been designed and constructed at the University of Iowa (Iowa City) since 1935. Over the years, hundreds of studies have examined issues related to the ITBS. The Riverside Assessment Program publishes 14 test levels, including the ITBS, from kindergarten through grade 12. The tests are numbered to correspond roughly with chronological age rather than grade. Alternate forms and related ability tests are offered. Tests are offered in the following areas: (1) vocabulary; (2) reading comprehension; (3) language; (4) mathematics concepts; (5) mathematics problem solving; (6) mathematics computation; and (7) social studies and science supplement to the ITBS batteries. Higher order thinking skills are measured throughout the ITBS batteries. Issues of item quality and item bias are discussed, with summaries of information about validity and scoring. Six tables provide scope and sequence and scoring information about the ITBS batteries. Numerous sample test items are included. (SLD) |
