Abstract	Parents who live with and deal with anorexia nervosa in a daughter often find themselves in crisis. The parent group is one response to that crisis. This study surveyed 30 Montana treatment centers, the 13 Montana AA high schools, and the 12 Montana colleges, universities, and junior colleges to determine what, if any, parent groups existed and what services were offered to students with eating disorders. Letters were sent to five national and international eating disorders associations, and phone calls were made to one national and one world organization. The questionnaires, letters, and phone calls were an attempt to try to find people and places for parents to contact for support with this problem. All of the national associations either proposed a specific model of self-help or support group for parents and family members, or they offered suggestions and help with starting such groups. The national groups also offered newsletters, membership, and information on the eating disorders, research, treatment, and related topics. Most had referral lists for medical and psychological treatment and had community education and awareness programs. They all gave a telephone numbers and addresses for further information. More research is needed so that professionals in the field of eating disorders will recognize the value of the parent group as a source of help for families of victims of anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders.
