Abstract | A survey of child care arrangements for Nebraska preschoolers was conducted in 1988 and documented characteristics of child care arrangements used in 1988 by Nebraska parents with preschool-age children and identified household characteristics associated with different types of child care. This report is organized in four parts. Methodology is discussed in the introduction. Following this, an overview of preschool child care arrangements covers characteristics of the working parent household, and working and nonworking parent child care arrangements. The next section, on child care alternatives, discusses: (1) characteristic differences in child care arrangements (in terms of provider and location, group size, fees, and the need for alternative arrangements); (2) characteristics of working parent households according to type of child care arrangement; and (3) most- and least-liked aspects of care arrangements. The report concludes with a consideration of implications for child care policy that focuses on access to child care depending on income and residence, and the process of regulating home care. Appendices A and B contain the survey instruments. There are 10 tables and 11 figures. (SH) |
