Abstract | A telephone survey of 4,364 randomly selected households in Alaska aimed at assessing the needs of disabled persons who were not institutionalized. In households that where found to have a disabled member, 514 interviews were conducted with the disabled person or a representative. The survey provided information on: (1) an estimated 22,220 persons with selected disabilities (most frequently reported included nonneuromuscular mobility impairments, arthritis, hearing impairments, and learning disabilities); (2) needs related to independent living services including medical care, disability information, and benefits assistance; (3) reasons why people cannot get the specific help they need; (4) needs related to assistive technology such as remote switches or special doors; and (5) characteristics of Alaska residents who are disabled in terms of age, income, education and employment. The document features ethnic (native/white) and location (urban/rural) comparisons. Data are provided for each question on the survey with frequency tabulations reflecting an estimate of the statewide number of persons associated with a particular response. Appendices include a description of the survey methods, the questionnaire, and a data dictionary used in the software which analyzed the results of the survey. This document contains numerous tables and figures. (KS) |
