Abstract | Using a "teaching case" format, this report tells the story of a married couple, Caroline and Rick, who travel to a village school in rural Alaska for their student teaching experience. Although each student teacher engages in innovative teaching practices, the faculty of the school perceives them to lack dedication to the teaching profession. The principal and cooperating teachers do not give them positive recommendations and they have trouble finding teaching positions the following year. Part I of the case study provides background and a context for the story. Part II presents the story first from Caroline's viewpoint, and then from Rick's viewpoint. Discussion questions at the end of Part II raise issues presented in the case such as the school culture, attitude of a student teacher, and the format of student teaching experiences. Appendix A is an open letter to student teachers written by one of Rick's cooperating teachers. The university supervisor discusses his view of the case in Appendix B. (KS) |
