| Abstract | This fact sheet presents information on the status of Asians in the United States. The following sections are included: (1) "Introduction," which includes Asian American population statistics, and the objectives, scope, and methodology of the study; (2) "Overall Income and Employment Status Comparable With U.S. Population, But Varies Widely Among Asian American Groups"; (3) "Overall Adult Educational Levels Same or Higher Than Total U.S. Adults, but Vary Widely Among Asian American Groups"; (4) "Health and Nutrition Appear to Compare Well With U.S. Population Overall, Except for Southeast Asian Refugees"; (5) "Welfare Participation Approximates Representation in U.S. Population"; (6) "Barriers Exist, but Do Not Prevent Welfare Participation"; and (7) "Programs Help New Arrivals Attain Economic Self-Sufficiency." The following information is appended: (1) chronology of U.S. laws and presidential actions affecting Asian immigration; (2) data limitations; (3) methodology; (4) Asian American and other community organizations contacted by The General Accounting Office; (5) statistics on education; (6) cancer deaths (1978-81); (7) cultural and religious barriers facing Southeast Asian refugees seeking medical treatment; and (8) major contributors to fact sheet.
