Abstract	This book describes the Black Cleveland experience from the Afrocentric perspective of African American community leaders and researchers who have contributed 22 chapters. It is intended to serve the following functions: (1) establish a knowledge base about African Americans in the Greater Cleveland Area; (2) disseminate an Afrocentric perspective as a way of learning about and evaluating the African American experience; (3) serve as an educational tool for both Black and White students in the public and private schools and institutions of higher learning, as well as adults who are engaged in ongoing learning experiences; (4) serve as a planning document for public and private organizations that are formulating programs designed to address community concerns impacting upon African American residents; (5) serve as a social action instrument from which strategies for specific intervention methodologies can be developed, ranging from resolutions to actual societal, organizational, and governmental change that promote an improvement in conditions for African Americans; (6) establish an African American resource personnel network for a unified, coordinated approach to the solution of systemic as well as episodic problems; and (7) serve as a foundation for a research agenda and the creation of an African American Greater Cleveland Think Tank and Community Data Bank. The following aspects of black life are addressed: (1) ethics; (2) government; (3) economy; (4) education; (5) family; and (6) criminal justice. Each chapter includes statistical data on tables and graphs and lists of references. (FMW)
