AbstractThe paper explores the role of higher education in the diffusion of cultural information. The paper analyzes the postsecondary curricular experience using data from the National Longitudinal Study for the Class of 1972 (NLS/72). Four stores of information are identified as the "primary" cultural store and secondary stores corresponding to demographic, cultural-interest, and specialist subgroups and these streams of information are represented by course clusters in: (1) minority and women's studies, (2) popular culture/media, (3) non-western culture and society, and (4) western culture and society. The paper also examines the nature of the institutions in which formal cultural studies are pursued and the demography of students who tend to engage in formal study in one or more of the cultural literacy clusters. Findings show that one out of five Bachelor's degree recipients in the NLS/72 had no postsecondary exposure to western cultural/social information at all. The lowest participation rates occurred among majors in engineering and applied sciences. Given the NLS/72 generation's limited exposure to its own culture and its even more limited exposure to secondary cultural literacies, it is concluded that this generation seems unsuited to participate in the diversity of world culture and economy. Includes 22 references. (JDD)
