AbstractDrawing from a nationwide pilot test of the Community College Student Experiences Questionnaire (CCSEQ), a study was conducted to compare Santa Monica College (SMC) students (N=106) with students attending nine other Southern California community colleges (N=498). The CCSEQ was designed to provide information on the relationship between students' participation in various activities and their progress toward their educational objectives. The instrument measured the amount and quality of effort students invested in academic, advising, and non-academic areas. In addition, it gathered information on units completed in each curriculum area, major field, part-time/full-time status, day/evening enrollment, amount of reading and writing assignments completed in class, cumulative grade point average (GPA), and students' perception of the progress they made towards achieving their goals. Major findings of the study included: (1) 74% of the SMC respondents were white compared to 37% of the non-SMC respondents; (2) 71% of the SMC respondents were 18-22 years of age compared to 54% of the non-SMC respondents; (3) 63% of both groups were enrolled full-time; (4) self-reported grade point averages indicated that SMC students slightly outperformed their non-SMC counterparts; (5) in comparison to the non-SMC students, the SMC students tended to take more general education courses, rather than vocational or occupational courses; (6) 66% of the SMC students took art, music, theater, and dance compared to 54% of their non-SMC counterparts; (7) non-SMC students spent more time than SMC students with their counselors and advisors; (8) SMC students under-utilized their faculty members, counselors, advisors, and several campus services, such as writing laboratories, learning centers, and library facilities; and (9) SMC students were no different than their non-SMC counterparts in their estimation of the progress they had made toward attaining several educational goals, both groups indicating only "some" progress toward these goals.
