AbstractThe Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) has been given to all students as an entry requirement into teacher education programs at Tennessee Technological University (Cookeville) since 1983. All students at the University are also required to take the American College Test (ACT). One of the questions in this study related to whether the same or similar information was already available from the ACT as was measured by the PPST. Further questions were examined regarding the relationship between the PPST and the ACT and measures of academic success, college grade point average (GPA), and scores on the National Teacher Examination (NTE). The study sample was comprised of 357 students enrolled at Tennessee Technological University between September 1984 and May 1989, who had taken both the PPST and the NTE prior to May 1989. Results from the analysis of 270 graduates reveal correlations between similar subtests of the PPST and ACT ranging from 0.58 to 0.71. The correlations between similar subtests of the PPST and NTE ranged from 0.51 to 0.71. Correlations between the predictor variables and GPA ranged from 0.05 to 0.32. Values for multiple correlations were slightly higher than were those for simple correlations. Twenty-eight tables present data from the study. (Author/SLD)
