AbstractThe evolution of the University of Minnesota's program of student volunteers in the college union is described. The program draws on developmental theories, and suggest ways of integrating union program production and specific educational goals for the volunteers engaged in that production: individual autonomy, commitment of values, integration of knowledge, intellectual competence, interpersonal competence, moral maturity, and respect for persons. Sixteen life skills (adaptability, assertiveness, communication, creative thinking, critical thinking, decision-making, financial management, follow-through, implementation, initiative, planning, relationship-building, problem-solving, tolerance for risk, and tolerance for stress) were linked to the seven goals in the programs in which student volunteers participate. 16 references.
