Abstract | The manual on the teaching of English as a Foreign or Second Language is intended as a practical classroom guide for Peace Corps volunteers. It describes procedures and offers sample exercises and activities for a wide range of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills (whole-class, small-group, and individual participation), and classroom testing and preparation for national examinations. The manual covers a variety of teaching situations, including primary and secondary schools and colleges, the office or workplace, school and work settings with limited facilities for instruction and those with ample support, and any geographical or cultural setting where Peace Corps volunteers may be found. Background and theoretical information are provided in addition to practical suggestions for classroom instruction. The first chapter deals with the needs and constraints of teaching in different situations. Chapter 2 discusses working with a variety of approaches. The next four chapters outline specific techniques and activities for teaching speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Chapter 7 addresses the teaching of grammar, and the final chapter focuses on lesson planning and testing. Appended materials include lists of textbooks and references, relevant organizations and publications, and acronyms. An evaluation form for evaluating the manual is included. (MS) |
