AbstractA project was conducted to increase as well as to professionalize communication between tutors and learners in a West German university's distance education program by the use of personal computers. Two tutors worked on the systematic development of a PC-based correcting system. The goal, apart from developing general language skills in English, was to prepare a plan that would comprise the development of texts for study, development of assignments related to the learning objectives, testing procedures, the everyday handling of the course, and the different kinds of evaluation. Through an advertisement in the student newsletter, 200 students with at least 4 years of learning English were recruited. It was decided that (1) tutors would correct assignments on the day they arrived from students; (2) tutors would provide personal comments to students to increase the feeling of personal contact; and (3) tutors would provide error-oriented tutoring. Other objectives were professionalization of commenting, keeping the system open, and decentralized handling and documentation. Evaluation of the course showed that completion rates nearly doubled compared with a similar course the year before, the only difference being the individualized correction service via personal computer.
