AbstractLouisiana is composed of a vast array of traditional cultures and activities. This resource directory to Louisiana folk arts and folk communities aims to promote better understanding and preservation of the cultural settings and meanings of those things already well known and to explicate the lesser-known activities that comprise living folk traditions. The articles, most with accompanying bibliographies, are divided into five sections: (1) "Folklife Research in Louisiana"; (2) "Ethnicity, Region, Occupation, and Family: The Social Contexts for Louisiana Folklife"; (3) "Living On and Off the Land in Louisiana: Crafts, Foodways, Boats, and Houses"; (4) "Documenting Tradition"; and (5) "Folklife and Public Policy." The articles include such topics as the history of folklife research in Louisiana, regional folklife, Creolization and ethnicity, children's folklore, traditional foodways, folk boats, folk houses, folk crafts, media documentation of folklife, folklife and education, a folklife plan for Louisiana, and the Vietnamese immigrants in New Orleans. Nine appendices provide access to resources relating to Louisiana folklife; they include an annotated bibliography of resources in research preservation and presentation, lists of dissertations and theses, film and video recordings, sound recordings, Louisiana festivals, and state documents, and a copy of the Louisiana Folklife Survey. Numerous black and white photographs are included. (JB)
