Abstract | A three-part study compared similarity-based learning (in which concepts are formed based on similarity among multiple examples) and explanation-based learning (in which general schema are acquired from a single example) in schema acquisition. Subjects, 16 undergraduates enrolled in introductory psychology courses at the University of Illinois and 4 paid subjects, participated in the first experiment; 30 students and 10 paid subjects participated in the second experiment; and 60 students participated in the third experiment. Subjects were asked in the first experiment to produce a general description of the schema, in the second experiment to generate another instance, and in the third experiment to answer yes or no questions about the schema. Results indicated that subjects could acquire a plan schema from a single example in knowledge-rich domains as predicted by the explanation-based approach. Results also indicated that subjects were not able to carry out explanation-based learning if they did not have sufficient domain knowledge and if the schema to be acquired was not structured by causal constraints.
