| Abstract | In a study of mothers' assessment of their infant's temperament during the first 3 months, a total of 116 mothers completed 23 scaled items assessing the 9 New York Longitudinal Study temperament dimensions, and cuddliness and soothability, at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months after delivery. Although nearly half of the mothers could not rate approach and adaptability at 1 week, most could rate all temperament dimensions at 1 and 3 months. Only cuddliness, approach, adaptability, and persistence did not change significantly. Six dimensions were related to at least two other dimensions at all times. Intracorrelation of all dimensions was significant for adjacent assessments. Mothers may assess infant temperament dimensions in terms of their own goal-directed activity. Variability in temperament dimensions over time indicates change either in the meaning of some items to mothers or in the infant's behavioral style as the infant grows older. (RH) |
