Abstract	The study reports on the incidence and prevalence of developmental disabilities in Iowa, in conjunction with estimates of the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities and their demand for services. An introductory section outlines the organization of the report and distinguishes among three types of demand for services: potential demand, expressed demand, and unexpressed demand. In the second section, estimates of the prevalence of developmental disabilities in 1985, 1990, and 1995 are presented by age groups (0-17, 18-64, and over 65) and by county. Detailed analyses of the strengths and limitations of data sources, along with an assessment of the reliability and concurrent validity of the estimates, are also presented, and further discussion identifies the estimation bases employed and elaborates on assumptions underlying the projections for 1990 and 1995. The report includes 17 tables and figures and a bibliography. It is recommended that an eligibility determination system be designed and implemented which can provide data to estimate the hidden demand associated with different service alternatives. (JW)
