AbstractA study surveyed the industrial status of the Pittsburg State University School of Technology and Applied Science female graduates of classes that graduated from 1976-1987. The data collection procedure consisted of two phases--a literature review pertaining to sex equity for women in technology and the survey of graduates at the bachelor and graduate levels. Of the 171 survey instruments mailed, 15 were returned as undeliverable; 45 completed surveys were returned for an approximate return of 29 percent. The majority were gainfully employed in full-time positions that used their college education. The largest percentage of the respondents worked in firms with 11-25 or 201-500 employees. Most had been at their present job from one to three years, with over half in nonsupervisory positions. The employers provided average fringe benefits for female technologists. Most reported that employers had a favorable outlook on pregnancy leave. Children who needed day care were tended by a private party. Many respondents were purchasing single-family dwellings. Most had made their career choice at the age of 20 and had planned their choice. Many felt their college education was adequate preparation for their postgraduation jobs. Most would recommend a career in a nontraditional field for an interested woman. (The instrument and data summaries are appended.) (YLB)
