Abstract | A national survey by the Higher Education Panel of the American Council on Education was conducted to provide some insight into what is happening in undergraduate international studies. Important features of international studies as they appear at a large stratified national sample of institutions are enumerated. These features are foreign language requirements, study abroad programs, internationally oriented majors and minors, the role of international studies in general education, on-campus administration of international studies, and internationally focused library resources. The availability and emphases of international studies vary widely among institutions of higher education, with marked differences in the patterns displayed by four- and two-year institutions. Information is provided in two parts (international studies at four-year institutions and international studies at two-year colleges) with a focus on academic programs, administrative characteristics, and opinions about international studies. There appears to be greater involvement in and support for international studies in the four-year sector than among two-year colleges. Two appendices provide the survey instrument and technical notes. The report contains 29 tables and 20 figures. (SM) |
