Abstract | This discussion of the role of the information professional in the utilization of information by all categories of users begins by suggesting answers to two questions: What is information? and Who are the users and their characteristics? Against this background, analyses are made of the intermediary role of the information professional who serves to link the user and the contents of documents--both those that are under his control and those that are not--and how he should be trained in order to obtain the basic knowledge and skills needed to perform his duties effectively. An outline of a curriculum designed to produce an information professional who will play a leading role in creating this link between the user and his information needs is also provided.
