| Abstract | Intended for secondary school counselors, the pamphlet examines effects of epilepsy on course work and career planning. Briefly covered are the nature of epilepsy, treatment, social impact, and public misunderstanding. Effects on academic achievement are discussed in terms of functional problems related to where the seizure activity is located in the brain, side effects of medication, missed schooling, and effects of recent diagnosis. The pamphlet distinguishes among seizure-related behavior problems, social reaction behavior problems, and unrelated behavior problems. The need to avoid overprotection is stressed with guidelines offered for participation in driver's education, physical education, the athletics program, and industrial arts. Ways the counselor can help build a positive attitude toward career planning are suggested as is utilizing vocational rehabilitation services for graduating students more severely impaired. (DB) |
