AbstractHistorical data (since 1968-69) and current data on schools are presented and their significance and implications discussed. The data include national population, birth rate, and age trends; enrollment trends in public and private schools; and enrollment trends in private schools by religious affiliation. Catholic school statistics, gathered from 172 archdiocesan and diocesan offices, include enrollment trends by level, region, type of school, and ethnic composition; pupil teacher ratios; staff employed; and percentages of lay/religious teachers. Highlights include the following findings: (1) the number of elementary school-age children will continue to increase, but that of the secondary school-age pupils will not stop declining until 1991-92; (2) private education represents a higher percentage of elementary and secondary enrollment in the 1980s than it did in the 1970s; (3) the number of prekindergarten and kindergarten pupils has increased dramatically over the past 5 years (215 percent); (4) the percentage of non-Catholics in Catholic schools was 11 percent in 1987-88; and (5) the percentage of minority students in Catholic schools has increased from 11 percent in 1970-71 to 22 percent in 1987-88.
