| Abstract | The refinement of the cognitive knowledge base was studied through exploration of the transition from novice to expert and the use of an instructional strategy called novice knowledge engineering. Six college freshmen, who were enrolled in an honors physics course, used an expert system to create questions, decisions, rules, and explanations pertaining to classical projectile motion. Construction of the knowledge base (CKB) was traced through a post-test. The progress of a particular male student, who was a confident and fluent problem solver, illustrated the progression. Integration and differentiation affected only a portion of this student's cognitive knowledge base. CKB was a practical application of new technology and research findings. The CKB process aids refinement of domain-specific knowledge due to greater degress of elaboration during encoding and greater quantity of material processed in an explicit, coherent context, and therefore in greater semantic depth.
