Abstract | The relationship of verbal skills to performance on the National Teacher Examinations Core Battery Test of General Knowledge was examined, using data from the June 1986 national administration. Differences in General Knowledge scores for self-identified Black and White examinees were found and were shown to interact with levels of achievement on the Test of Communication Skills (CS). Item difficulty correlations showed the Test of General Knowledge to be more homogenous within groups defined by verbal abilities (CS scores) than within groups defined by ethnic identification. The results suggest that unexplored factors may also affect scoring patterns and that trait differences in verbal skills were observed to be a factor in general knowledge scores. (Data are summarized in table form). (Author) |
