| Abstract | A study investigated the perceptions and commercial problems of craftspeople in the South West region of England and suggested some solutions. Questionnaires were sent to 600 identified enterprises and craftspeople. From the 51 percent who responded, 50 sites were chosen for semistructured interviews. The perspectives of agencies and buyers working with craftspeople were also gathered. Interview results were used to develop and implement four marketing workshops. The study showed that there is an urgent need for training in marketing skills for craftspeople, but there are ideological barriers for many that make existing curriculum material inappropriate and direct practical application more acceptable. The study suggested that colleges and other institutions should design and implement education and training programs relevant to those needs. Open and distance learning should also be considered as options, together with the feasibility of regional databases for craftspeople, offering resources for specific information requests, including business opportunities.
