Abstract | Materials to be used in workshops to teach language teacher trainees the communicative approach to language testing are presented. The materials were developed from a 1985 Council of Europe workshop held in York, England. They include preliminary notes for workshop organizers, an introductory "ice-breaker" activity, and six content units, each consisting of a preliminary reading, a format for discussion, and group tasks using materials in other languages. The units' themes are: what is meant by "communication" in a foreign language; the content of a communicative testing syllabus; testing communicative competence at the national level; classroom assessment in a communicative approach; training teachers to test communicative competence; and testing communicative performance in foreign languages. The materials conclude with a summary of the issues and the responses of the original workshop group. (MSE) |
