AbstractA study of children's perceptions of self and of significant adults investigated Sullivan's (1953) concepts of good me/bad me and good mother/bad mother and extended the analysis to children's perceptions of fathers and teachers. Subjects were 10-year-old elementary school students from low-income families who were enrolled in a longitudinal study of children and families. The total sample included data from 10 white boys, 12 white girls, 37 black boys, and 40 black girls. Measures used to collect child self-reports in individual interviews included a Self-Evaluation Inventory, a Self-Report of Conduct Inventory, The Self-Rating Scale for Depression, the Affect Balance Scale, and the Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children. Child perceptions of parent behavior were collected with brief versions of the Child Report of Parent Behavior Inventory, which was revised to develop scales for child reports of teacher acceptance and rejection. Findings suggested that (1) children may have organized perceptions of adults which are internalized as positive and negative self-perceptions; (2) perceptions of parents may be generalized to other adults; and (3) perceptions of self may be externalized as perceptions of others' attitudes toward the self.
