Abstract | Results of a 50-state survey of statewide or systemwide approaches to assessment and outcomes measurement in postsecondary education are presented. Respondents were members of the State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO) organization. The January-February 1987 survey of SHEEO academic and executive officers indicated that two-thirds of states had formal initiatives labeled "assessment." One difference across states was the extent to which they considered assessment and outcomes measurement to be a distinct policy area. Slightly more than half the respondents saw the main role of their state board as one of actively encouraging, promoting, or facilitating institutional intiatives in assessment and outcomes measurement. Brief descriptions by state boards of their assessment efforts are provided. These efforts can be categorized as follows: mandated statewide testing programs; early intervention programs; encouraging institutional action; assessment within existing statewide mechanisms; and statewide monitoring of other outcomes, such as student retention, job placement of college graduates, and economic and community development. The state profiles include the name and title of the contact person. (SW) |
