Abstract | This report contains data collected in the school-age child care supplement to the December 1984 Current Population Survey. Questions in the supplement addressed the extent to which school-age children were not in the care of their parents during nonschool hours and the extent to which they were unsupervised by any adult. For each child 5 to 13 years old in the household, questions were included on whether he or she regularly spent time alone or in the care of someone other than a parent before school, after school, or at night. In addition, there were questions for each time period on who, if anyone, cared for the child, age of the caretaker, and daily duration of the care arrangement. Tables in the text concern: (1) care of school-age children by period of the day, type of household, and labor force status of mother for children 5 to 13 years old enrolled in school; (2) after-school caretaker of children by type of household, labor force status of mother, and race; (3) distribution of enrolled children by family type, labor force status of mother, and race; (4) and child care status of children 6 to 13 years old with mothers who were employed full time for 1965, 1974, and 1984. Seven additional detailed tables are included along with material concerning the reliability of the estimates. (RH) |
