AbstractA model to distinguish persisters and nonpersisters at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, was developed. Persisters and nonpersisters differed in background characteristics, attitudes toward and interaction with the university, opportunities to leave, and intentions. Responses to a mail survey were returned by 86 first-time freshmen (38% response rate). Bean's Synthetic Model of Student Attrition was used to design questions. Nonpersisters were found to differ significantly from persisters in that nonpersisters: were less satisfied with their overall experience at the college, had lower grade point averages, had higher Scholastic Aptitude verbal scores, took fewer credit hours, were less satisfied with their academic performance, had more difficulty doing class work, were more bored in class and did not feel they adjusted well to college, were less positive about their advisers, and had lower job expectations. Discriminate analysis indicated that the model was 96.1% effective in correctly classifying persisters from nonpersisters. The questionnaire is included. (SW)
