AbstractThe purpose of the study reported in this document was to describe the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the vocational teacher education programs among institutions that are members of the University Council for Vocational Education. A questionnaire was mailed to representatives of each member institution in October 1985, with a 100 percent response rate. Findings were reported in seven areas: personnel, credit hour production, administrative structure, financial information, undergraduate data, masters degree programs, and doctorates. The following implications were drawn: (1) the number of full-time faculty in vocational education units in universities has been reduced during the past five years; (2) the use of graduate teaching assistants has increased; (3) faculty members in vocational education units spend more time teaching and less time conducting research than do their counterparts in other academic disciplines; (4) salaries are similar among vocational education and other academic teachers; (5) most institutions have seen reduced demand for vocational education courses during the past five years; (6) the state agencies administering vocational education have reduced the priority for funding vocational teacher education during the same period; (7) reduced resources have forced a higher percentage of vocational education budgets to go for salaries rather than for equipment; (8) the quality of vocational education students has increased, but their numbers have declined; and (9) the number of students in doctoral programs in vocational education has declined. (The majority of this report is made up of tables supporting the data findings.) (KC)
