| Abstract | Relating findings to child welfare, this monograph discusses the description of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), the background and history of the affliction, and its transmission and treatment. The review of the brief history of AIDS addresses the serious and emotionally charged issues associated with the disease, public and professional concern about its transmission and treatment, the plight of children with AIDS, and their impact on child welfare agencies. Implications for child welfare are discussed in terms of placement decisions, child care, and ethical concerns, including foster parents' rights, the ill child's rights, and agencies' duties. It is concluded that, for the near future, increasing numbers of children ill with AIDS will require placement and special care. Child welfare agencies will be confronted with service provision problems and ethical dilemmas. Appendices provide tables of data, a definition of pediatric AIDS, and a list of recommendations for foster care of children with AIDS. (RH) |
