AbstractA study was conducted to compare the academic progress of two-year college transfers, four-year college transfers, and continuing sophomores and juniors (natives) at the University of Illinois at Chicago as measured by mean grade point average (GPA), academic status, and continued enrollment through 2 years after transfer. Student data for each term from fall 1983 through summer 1985 were used to compare the three student groups in 10 subject matter areas. Study findings included the following: (1) 45% of the community college transfers and 41% of the four-year transfers graduated or continued on clear or probationary status; (2) natives had a 79% retention rate; (3) 8% of the community college group and 11% of the four-year group graduated, while 39% of the natives graduated; (4) both two-year and four-year transfers experienced a first term drop in mean GPA--.49 for the community college group and .11 for the four-year group; and (5) by the end of the second year following transfer, 23% of the community college transfers and 21% of the four-year college transfers had been dropped or had left while on probation. Several figures and data tables illustrate the text. A bibliography and six supplementary tables are appended. (LAL)
