AbstractThis methods and materials guide for native language instruction for immigrants in British elementary and secondary schools includes discussions of the needs of the learners, the traditional approach to native language instruction, experimentation with new methods through bilingual books, the teaching of reading for information and pleasure, the evaluation of new books for secondary instruction, the designing of a curriculum to teach language skills other than reading, and the preparation of instructional materials for classroom use. The guide is not language-specific, but it contains illustrative examples from Urdu. General references and references for Urdu teaching materials are appended. (MSE)
