Abstract | The paper examines the need and implementation of transitional employment programs for handicapped youth. Effects on the handicapped of future automation are considered along with the need for school-business cooperation to prepare for the future. The importance of initial success in any innovation is noted. A Chicago transitional employment program is described which provided work experiences in local hospitals. Organization and operation of the program are discussed. The program features a prevocational coordinator who matches students with jobs and monitors progress. The program includes a placement component designed to ease the way toward full time competitive employment. (CL) |
