Abstract	This paper emphasizes the need for early childhood teachers to value themselves more highly in order to better their work with young children. The goal of working with children must be to build their self-esteem so they like themselves as human beings. The document (1) reviews research findings that will help teachers make insightful caregiving decisions, (2) describes early learning in group care, and (3) suggests numerous positive discipline techniques. The review of research describes findings concerning attachment, attachment and competence, control and competence, sex differences in early childhood education, factors influencing language development, the relationship between physical punishment and child competence, television and prosocial development, child abuse and the early childhood classroom, and the effects of day care on child development. The discussion of early learning in group care describes the development of object permanence, the understanding of means-ends and causal relationships, classification ability, seriation, and aspects of language development such as functions of early speech productions. Interspersed in the text are suggestions of ways teachers can most appropriately influence young children's development. The discussion of discipline techniques briefly reviews a few books written on the topic and suggests many positive ways of influencing children's behavior. (RH)
