AbstractA project identified consumer education content that Louisiana consumer and home economics teachers perceive as being important. It also evaluated content of curriculum guides currently available from states and determined if any of these meet the needs of home economics consumer education programs in Louisiana. A questionnaire was developed to identify perceived needs of students in regard to consumer education topics. Of 584 questionnaires mailed to Louisiana home economics teachers, 262 were returned; 790 of 1,105 selected consumers throughout the state returned questionnaires. A review of current consumer education curriculum guides used in other states determined that these topics were included: goals, decision making, satisfying wants, investments, and consumer protection. A survey of Louisiana home economics teachers' stated needs indicated they included decision making, goals, consumer credit, and housing decisions most often. Nine teachers participated in two workshops at which they evaluated nine guides selected by project directors as appropriate for use in Louisiana home economics classes. Three superior guides were selected and subjected to intense evaluation/discussion. Teachers recommended adoption of the Oklahoma Consumer Education Guide and portions of the Oklahoma Comprehensive Guide to Home Economics I. (Twelve tables are provided. Appendixes include instruments and teacher evaluation and recommendation forms.) (YLB)
