AbstractWritten from a conservative perspective, this handbook provides practical advice to "parent activists" who wish to organize groups to influence or oppose school policies. Each of the six "steps" is presented in a question-and-answer format, followed in certain instances by "example cases" and attachments. Step one, "Choose your battle," provides guidelines for establishing the purpose and objectives of a parent group. Step two, "Create your organization," covers such initial concerns as recruiting members, naming the group, appointing officers and bylaws, and meetings. Step three, "Choose a course of action," provides tactics for putting pressure on decision-makers, building a broad coalition of supporters, and anticipating "attacks" from the liberal opposition. Example cases are provided, along with the following attachments: a worksheet for creating an action plan, tips on writing a newsletter, and a sample of such a newsletter entitled "Christian Impact" from Arlington, Virginia. Step four, "Publicity," provides guidance on press relations, media encounters, and press releases. Three examples of effective press releases are included. Step five, "Minor and major events," provides advice on staging public meetings, publicizing them, mailing lists, guest speakers, debates, and radio talk shows. An attachment provides a timeline for public meetings. Step six, "Future possibilities," provides guidance on establishing realistic goals and following up on successes. A story about an Oklahoma "Parents' Rights" bill is attached, and a lengthy bibliography is included. (TE)
