Abstract | The purpose of this booklet is to help teachers become familiar with current research-based spelling trends so that they can apply them in their classrooms. The first section of the booklet reviews current trends likely to influence spelling instruction, including practices related to the writing process, studying spelling from the learner's perspective, and computer assisted instruction. The second section discusses research findings related to both the content and the methods of spelling instruction. Topics discussed in this section include word selection, spelling rules, phonics, the test-study-test method, the list versus context approach, ineffective methods, and ways to measure spelling achievement. The third section offers suggestions for applying research findings to instruction in the areas of readiness, formal instruction, functional spelling, individualized spelling, and promoting student interests.
