AbstractWith support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, writing teachers at three central Illinois high schools, a community college, and Illinois State University (ISU) are addressing the problem of getting composition teachers to cooperate in developing long range curricula and sharing actual classroom practices through a collaborative teaching project. The program began in July 1983 and will continue through May 1985. It is subdivided into five stages that are carefully structured to build a sequential writing program starting in the sophomore year of high school and moving through the freshman year of college. Participating teachers first met in daily workshops for a month studying recent research on the writing process and on the relationship between cognitive growth and the development of writing abilities. During the fall semester, the high school and community college teachers cooperatively taught the freshman writing course at ISU with the two university teachers. The ISU instructors then collaboratively taught the high school and community college students with their counterparts. After the teaching was completed, the participants met again to develop a curricular plan for each of the project's courses and to integrate that course into a long-term sequence. (CRH)
