Abstract | The guide is designed to help educators integrate the study of aging into the high school curriculum. Objectives are to promote and support the study of aging and the aging process, dispel popular misconceptions surrounding aging, aid educators in establishing programs with, by, and for seniors, and provide a list of helpful resource groups. Arranged into 7 parts, part 1 focuses on biological aging and myths related to lifelong learning, flexibility and change, sex, and senility. Part 2 deals with retirement and discusses income, employment, and profitable retirement. Part 3 discusses active involvement in community life and part 4 examines ways in which seniors handle problems of loneliness, poverty, and housing. Part 5 focuses on intergenerational programs such as in-school teaching and placement programs, teaching-learning programs, after-school job registries, intergenerational health fairs, in-school work assistance programs, adopt a grandparent/grandchild program, heritage programs, tutoring programs in schools, and conferences. In part 6, aging in other societies is briefly discussed. The document concludes with part 7, a 5-page annotated bibliography of over 25 books and films produced between 1976 and 1981. (LH) |
